You repeatedly make decisions without considering the consequences. For example, you often buy non-essentials you can’t afford, are impulsive, make rash decisions or feel out of control.
You seek dangerous thrills. Loving to travel or sample new foods is fine, but beware if you crave perilous sports (paragliding, bungee-jumping, parachuting) or indulge in alcohol, or recreational or illegal drugs.
You hide your behaviors from even family and close friends because you don’t want them to know you’re out overspending, gambling, at a bar, deep into video games or engaging in another undesirable activity.
You have a history of depression and/or anxiety. People in that category are up to three times more prone to constantly abuse drugs and/or alcohol.
Your low self-esteem compels you to do things—overeat, drive way over the speed limit, shoplift, spend excessive time on the internet—to your detriment.
You negatively obsessive over things and have a hard time letting go of those unhealthy thoughts. They swirl uncontrollably around in your head. Though you try to use rationale and other distractions, they’re stubborn and won’t leave.
Others in your family are or have been addicts. You could have inherited the gene from your parents or grandparents. Children of alcoholics are four times more likely to develop substance use disorder than the general population.
