Are you considering seeing a therapist this year, or perhaps thinking about finding a new one? Our therapist at Mars & Venus Counseling Center would like to use today’s post to make a few suggestions about what you should know before arriving for your first appointment.
The first point that’s important to keep in mind is that seeking the help of a therapist is not a sign of weakness; quite the opposite. It’s a sign that you are strong enough to take this life-changing step. It also shows that you have come to accept that having a mental illness is every bit as legitimate as dealing with a physical illness. Willpower alone is not a cure for either one; both require treatment with an appropriately trained professional.
Another key consideration is the relationship between yourself and the therapist. Is the therapist you’ve chosen a good fit for you? Do you feel safe, comfortable, and listened to in a non-judgemental way? Does the therapist have experience providing treatment for the issues you are experiencing? These questions can most likely be answered within the first few sessions, and if your instincts tell you it’s not a relationship that is working for you, don’t hesitate to move on.
It’s also important to understand that therapy is not a quick fix, it’s a process that takes time, and the amount of time is different for each patient. Long-held behaviors are not changed overnight, and it’s not unusual to experience a certain amount of discomfort as deeply rooted feelings are uncovered and explored. Change may come more slowly than you would like, but it’s well worth it in the long run.
The therapist at Mars & Venus Counseling Center invites new patients to contact our office to schedule an appointment to discuss how a collaborative relationship in our sessions can lay the groundwork for real and lasting change. Let’s explore whether working together is the right fit for you.
