Shyness is a normal emotion. Most people feel shy at times and nonassertive in certain situations. However, if you feel that you are unsure of how and when to be assertive or have trouble finding the right balance of being firm without being rude, you may benefit from counseling. Assertiveness is a communication skill and like most skills, it can be improved.
Assertiveness, which is defined in the dictionary as “characterized by bold or confident statements and behaviors,” is associated with self-confidence, strength, and effectiveness. And there are a number of benefits to being assertive such as improving self esteem, gaining respect from peers, and improving communication. On the flip side, issues with assertiveness can result in negative emotions and behaviors that can interfere with your goals in life.
The good news is that there are many tools we can offer to help you learn to be more assertive. This is a skill that requires some practice. With the right guide, you can improve this area and see the immediate results of the change. Sometimes other emotions like anger or fear can get in the way of being assertive and be misinterpreted by others. If you feel your intentions are not understood or your communication style is not working, you may benefit from a more assertiveness training, The goal is to help you express what you’re feeling in a clear and confident way. By being more assertive, you will find you are more respected, and may get your way more often! This is useful for work-related situations as well as in your relationships. It’s never too late to improve on yourself. Start today!
