It’s not unusual for people who have gone through one or a series of shocking experiences to continue feeling the distress long after the event has passed. They feel depressed, vulnerable and scared. They may be so psychologically scarred that they’re unable to come to terms with the memory. If you’re one of those people, there are ways to help yourself resolve your issues.
From diagnosis to treatment, the office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center is here for you every step of the way. We give all our patients kind and respectful care to help them rectify their issues as soon as possible. Seeking help from a therapist is one of them. “Talking it out” can do wonders in helping you move forward.
While receiving professional help, these methods of self-care will help you on your journey.
Get into a routine schedule. It will give you a sense of normality and control.
Don’t remain socially isolated. Keep in close touch with your friends, family and trustworthy acquaintances. Reach out to those who may have gone through the same or a similar event; they can probably relate to your feelings.
Get physically active. Exercise is a valuable way to cope with the repercussions of a distressing experience. A brisk walk for at least 30 minutes five days a week is a great way to start. If you’re on an indoor treadmill, keep your mind from wandering to “a bad place” by listening to music or watching TV. If you’re outside, study the scenery.
Refrain from alcohol and recreational drugs. They will numb your emotions and memories in the short term, but in the long run, they’re counterproductive and could lead to dependence as well as physical and mental damage.
Get out in the world. People with physiological trauma tend to isolate themselves. This leads to a self-centered perspective, obsessive thoughts and limited mental stimulation. Leaving your usual environment lets you form another mindset.
Keep your body strong. Eat nutritious foods. Your body needs those vitamins and minerals; junk food may tantalize your taste buds, but it won’t fulfill your nutritional needs. Maintain a regular sleep and wake schedule.
The office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center is passionate about treating all aspects of mental health. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment. We look forward to helping you.
