Everybody suffers from anxiety at one time or another. Some forms are spurred by temporary situations, such as when a law student is nervous about his upcoming bar exam. When other forms are persistent and excessive with no stressors present, you may have an anxiety disorder that interferes with your daily life.
Whatever mental or emotional you suffer from, you owe it to yourself to get the care you need. At the office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center, we understand the complexities of emotional difficulties. We work with our patients in gentle, compassionate ways that help them resolve underlying issues, lessen their symptoms and restore their emotional health.
There are quite a few types of anxiety disorders. Two of those types are general anxiety disorder (GAD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), both of which can be difficult to control. It’s thought that GAD and OCD are outlets for anxiety.
People with GAD constantly overthink things, always pondering the likelihood that something(s) negative will befall them. They catastrophize by playing out undesirable scenarios and wondering how or if they’ll be able to handle them. The excessive worry haunts them almost every day for at least six months. GAD’s causes are usually inexplicable.
OCD symptoms present themselves as compelling behaviors and fixated thoughts in four categories.
Cleaning and contamination: overwhelming and even illogical fears about being infected with germs, dirt or other things that can make you sick.
Symmetry and order: compulsively repeating actions that they need to assure them that things are in the exact correct place or are flawlessly lined up with each other.
Uncontrollable forbidden thoughts: these sexual, violent or religious notions are offensive or graphic, which leads to feelings of shame and angst.
Compulsive hoarding: a profound need to gather and keep particular items or an array of things—even stuff that seems useless or invaluable to most people.
Controlling anxiety is no easy feat for many people. It can be a complex process, and “dialing it down” usually takes more than a strong will. No single therapy is right for everyone. The office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center will address your overall needs, not just your anxiety. Our treatment plans include talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, ongoing assessment, and, if needed, family involvement. Take that first step by calling us today. We’re here to help.
