Most of us aren’t prepared for the long emotional journey that follows the death of a loved one. This especially holds if the death was sudden and unexpected. Even worse is if the person died in a violent manner or by suicide. Grief can be compared to an open wound: With proper care, it will eventually heal, but a scar—perhaps a deep one—will always remain.
The office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center works with patients to help them untangle and sort through their painful feelings. Clients receive empathy, patience and a broad spectrum of professional knowledge, all of which gently guide them along their difficult path.
Here are some typical reactions to grieving.
In the beginning, feelings are intense and close to the surface. You may feel steady and composed one minute, and the next minute you want to break down and cry. It’s a rollercoaster of reactions with no rhyme or reason.
The term “grief work” is true. It may be the hardest emotional and mental work you will ever have to deal with. It involves exploring deep depths of yourself and your relationship with the departed. Grief therapy can be draining, especially when it involves subjects that are difficult to talk about or circumstances that are painful to revisit. Be kind to yourself in every way possible.
Triggers tend pop up. You may not feel grief for several hours, days or weeks; then someone you suddenly run into, something you unexpectedly hear or something you come across right out of the blue triggers your feelings, and the grief comes roaring back. You seem to be taking one step forward and two steps back.
Some people prefer to grieve on their own and in private. That is, of course, their personal choice. But going solo can leave them lost, confused and isolated. That’s exactly why it’s important to get help from a professional therapist. There’s no need to be embarrassed about it or face it alone.
The office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center has expert knowledge regarding all aspects of how to help people deal with grief and bereavement. Please feel free to call us to schedule an appointment.
