At 37 years old with two little kids, I find myself in the best shape of my life. It's not just about physical fitness; it's about the journey that has led me here and the invaluable lessons I've learned along the way. Fitness has not only introduced me to some of my closest friends but has also instilled in me a sense of confidence and trust in what I call my "fitness freedom."
This freedom goes beyond just following a workout routine; it's about being in sync with my body and mind. It's about making responsive decisions that prioritize my well-being in the moment. I've learned not to succumb to pressures or unhealthy urges to push through when my body signals otherwise. Instead, I've cultivated the inner strength to let go of insecurities and understand that more is not always better.
Recently, I faced one of the toughest challenges – battling through illness. After enduring what I can only describe as the worst 36 hours of sickness, I realized the importance of listening to my body. Rather than forcing myself through workouts, I chose a modified approach, easing back into movement with intention and care.
I firmly stand against the notion of "working out even when you're sick." My priority shifted from burning calories or building muscle to allowing my body the energy it needed to heal and recover. In those moments, sweating it out or pushing myself to the brink was not the answer. I recognized that a few days off wouldn't derail the progress I've made over the years. Rest is just as crucial a part of the journey as the workouts themselves, especially when battling illness.
This experience reinforced a fundamental truth – fitness is about more than physical exertion. It's about understanding and respecting the body's signals, whether it's the need to push forward or the necessity to pause and recuperate. It's about embracing the freedom to adapt and adjust according to what serves our well-being best in any given moment.
Beyond the physical benefits, these lessons delve into deeper realms of self-awareness and self-care. They remind us of the importance of balance, listening to our bodies, and honoring our holistic well-being.
So, as I continue on my fitness journey, I carry with me not just the gains in strength and endurance but also the wisdom gained from embracing fitness freedom. It's a journey that extends far beyond the gym, enriching every aspect of my life with its invaluable lessons.
