Your brain is your body’s command and control center. This three-pound dynamo processes all of your emotions and tells your body to make what it believes to be the appropriate reaction. Those responses can be physical, mental or emotional, as well as conscious or unconscious.
The office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center is committed to helping patients by using empathy, patience and a broad spectrum of knowledge. We provide the highest quality of skilled and experienced care. We tailor the healing process to each patient’s needs. And, of course, we treat our patients with total therapist-patient confidentiality, whatever the nature of their issues.
Here are some corporeal issues that can be ignited by anxiety.
Tense muscles. This is your body preparing to protect itself. The muscles in your extremities, neck, back or, actually, anywhere, can become taut one by one or all at once. The tightness usually fades with the anxiety.
Sleep difficulties. Not many people can say that they haven’t, at one time or another, been kept awake by worry. It can range from angst over your teen not yet being home after a night out to fretting that you forgot to pay your electricity bill. And the whole time you’re aware that as every second ticks by, your alarm clock is closer to going off.
High blood sugar. Stress hormones provide a needed surge of energy when you need to fight or run from danger. But constant fear and angst can leave you with high blood sugar for extended periods, which can eventually bring about heart disease, kidney disease and stroke.
A weakened immune system. Even simply thinking about something that brings you fear or worry can compromise your body’s defense against germs. Negative apprehension that lasts for days, months or years might hinder your immune system even more, making it tougher to combat flu, herpes, shingles and other viruses.
Digestive issues. Feeling stressed out can promote constant nausea and vomiting. If this describes you, you could develop stomach ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Fear and fretfulness can also lead to constipation and diarrhea by having negative effects on the muscles that control your elimination system.
Life is too short to be in a constant state of anxiety. A therapist can help you identify the reasons behind it so you can find peace and well-being. Mars & Venus Counseling Center’s professionals are dedicated to the care and comfort of every patient.
