For those experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, trauma, grief and loss, psychotherapy with an experience professional has been found to be immensely beneficial. Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, helps patients identify, understand and change harmful thoughts, beliefs and behaviors. In private, confidential sessions with our trained, licensed therapist at Mars & Venus Counseling Center, we work together to build a bridge to a fuller, more rewarding life.
One form of psychotherapy that has been found to be particularly effective for those dealing with self-destructive behaviors such as substance abuse, self harm, mood and eating disorders, and an inability to tolerate stress or regulate emotions, is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, also known as DBT. The goal of DBT treatment is to pinpoint and then understand harmful thoughts and patterns, and then to change those behaviors.
The success of this type of treatment depends on the patient’s willingness to be an active participant by doing “homework assignments” in between sessions, and to carefully chart their emotional reactions to daily situations. Patients learn to practice mindfulness (being aware and engaged with each moment), to tolerate distressing situations without reacting harmfully or angrily, and to recognize and adjust their emotions during moments of stress. Improving self-esteem and relationships with others are also key skills that are part of DBT.
Working with our trained mental health professional, our patients feel safe and supported when identifying and discussing deeply personal thoughts and emotions they may have never felt comfortable sharing before. There is no judging here; our goal is to help each patient to make positive changes that will result in a more satisfying life.
