May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S., a movement that has been observed nationally since 1949. And although much has changed in the way mental illnesses are diagnosed and treated, perceptions still remain among some people that mental disorders are less legitimate than physical ailments. Our therapist at Mars & Venus Counseling Center wants to dispel this myth and urge anyone suffering from mental health issues to “Look Within” — a theme of this year’s observance — and consider ways to make small but significant improvements.
Self-care plays a critical role in promoting mental health, helping us to release energy, relieve stress and boost our immune systems. Here are a few simple steps provided by the National Institute for Mental Health to get started. Keep in mind that even taking a small step can make a big difference.
Our compassionate, collaborative therapist at Mars & Venus Counseling Center provides a safe, confidential space for patients struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, anger, eating disorders, family and marriage issues, and a range of other issues.
