Narcissists and How To Deal With Them

If you know a person with abnormally high opinions of himself (or herself) and shows little or no regard for others, he could be a narcissist. A narcissist is self-centered, conceited and constantly craves attention. He couldn’t care less about your feelings and rarely acquires empathy.

The Ugly Truth

You’re simply a means or an obstacle to getting what he (or she) wants. He’s clueless as to how he affects you. He requires a steady stream of your praise, and if that praise dries up even momentarily, things could get thorny if he quickly becomes aggressive and hostile.

His ego is fragile because he’s afraid that he’s inferior in some way. He might lash out, intimidate, belittle and be demeaning if someone pokes a hole in his ego. 

How To Deal

Don’t blame yourself if you didn’t spot your romantic partner’s signs. She (or he) can be popular and charming at first but eventually become cruel, manipulative and icy. She might strike up an affair with a man she thinks is superior to you. Don’t defend her when she offends or deceives others; she’ll likely do the same to you. Get out of the relationship, and then concentrate on your own goals and dreams.

If a co-worker is a narcissist, she’ll overinflate her proficiencies and insult yours. She’ll boast with no modesty, give unsolicited advice, crash private conversations and steal ideas without a second thought. 

Narcissists won’t apologize for their behavior or how they conduct their lives, so you should: 

• Set boundaries. Decide on your limit and don’t waiver from it even if they attempt to chastise, win over or harass you.
• Critique gently. They may become enraged if you menace their self-image. Concentrate on how their conduct makes you feel instead of on their objectives.
• Walk away if they get angry. Try again when they’re calm.
• Don’t argue. They criticize your reasoning and give no credence to your opinion.
