People who are prone to anxiety are all too familiar with how they feel when their angst kicks in. Their minds are overcome by fear, insecurity and a sense of being out of control. Their brains are set on “high-alert mode, waiting for something dreadful to happen. That trepidation might center on a specific worry. Or, it might be an overall emotion of doom. That’s why learning ways to manage bouts of anxiety is so important.
The office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center is committed to the mental health of all of our patients. Our aim is to provide each with the utmost care and best treatments possible. If you’re having difficulty with problems relating to your constant anxiety, know that you will be in excellent, caring hands of professionals who are eager to help you.
Here are four ways to cope when angst flares up.
Schedule worry timeouts. Give yourself a specific time to let your worries hinder your thoughts. Doing so will release your mind of those negative thoughts so it’s free to concentrate on more productive ideas and things the rest of the day. Allow yourself to worry 15 minutes daily, and try to take the break at the same time each day.
Remember to breathe. This may seem unnecessary, but when you’re feeling overwrought, breathing exercises help slow your racing thoughts. Take a deep breath and hold it in for five seconds and then deeply exhale. Repeat this until your stress calms down.
Put your worries in perspective. Jot them on a piece of paper. Later, during your 15-minute timeout, examine which ones are truly worth giving time to.
Recognize your unease. Tell yourself or even say out loud, “I’m really anxious right now.” This acknowledgment will take away some of its power.
The therapists at the office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center understand the complex and interconnected ways that human emotions work. Our staff is dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. Every patient is unique, and each individual’s needs vary.
