Bipolar disorder (once called manic depression) is a psychiatric state that triggers severe mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and emotional lows (clinical depression). Though bipolar disorder can arise at any age, it’s usually diagnosed when someone is in his teens or early 20s. Indications can vary from person to person and may fluctuate over time.
Bipolar disorder is, quite unfortunately, a life-long illness. But those who have it can manage their symptoms by abiding by a treatment plan that includes medications and psychotherapy.
The psychiatrists at the office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center are experts at helping people manage a wide range of psychiatric issues, including bipolar disorder. Our skilled and compassionate doctors are thoroughly trained in how to help you cope with your condition. We offer hope, compassion and empathy.
Several types of bipolar and related disorders exist. Among them are mania or hypomania and depression. Symptoms can cause erratic mood and behavior swings.
Bipolar I. A person has had at least one manic episode that was preceded or followed by an incident of hypomania or major depression. The mania may sometimes activate psychosis (a disruption from reality).
Bipolar II: A person has suffered at least one major depression, at least one episode of hypomania but never a manic event.
Cyclothymic: An adult has experienced multiple periods of hypomania and depression for at least two years; the depression is less severe than major depression. For a child or teen, the period is one year.
Bipolar II is not a lesser form of bipolar I; it’s a separate diagnosis. The manic episodes of bipolar I can be severe and dangerous. Someone with bipolar II tends to be depressed for a lot longer.
At the office of Mars & Venus Counseling Center, all of our clients are treated with the utmost patience, compassion and conviction. We’re not here to judge you; we’re here to help.
