At least 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from an eating disorder, according to the National Eating Disorder Association. The classic disorders of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating each have complex psychological causes, and result in a host of physical complications.
Though each eating disorder has unique characteristics, they all have detrimental effects and are best treated when addressed early.
Anorexia Nervosa: People with this condition have a distorted body image that causes them to believe that they are overweight when in fact they are most often extremely underweight. They eat far too little, often exercise too much, and sometimes perform certain behaviors to make them lose weight.
Bulimia Nervosa: This disorder is characterized by severe overeating followed by purging, taking laxatives, or exercising to an extreme.
Binge Eating Disorder: One of the most common eating disorders, where individuals consume larger than normal amounts of food in a short period of time, often eating very quickly and frequently while alone. The condition differs from bulimia because sufferers digest what they eat.
Retraining the mind and body
Eating disorders are often, but not always, associated with additional mental disorders, which is why psychotherapy and behavioral therapy are the main forms of treatment. My goal is to give my patients the therapy, emotional support and education they need to identify the root causes of their problem, develop the skills to overcome those issues, and practice mindful eating.
